A power of attorney may allow a lawyer or other authorised representative to act for you in Turkey. The wording, issuer, authentication, translation and special formalities depend on the transaction. Arrange the draft before your consular or notarial appointment.
Authority should match the job
A generic power of attorney is not appropriate for every legal matter. Litigation, divorce, settlement, receiving money and disposal of property can involve specific powers. Define what is authorised, who may act, any limits and whether substitution is allowed. Giving broad authority simply to save time can create risk. Conversely, an instrument that omits essential authority may not be accepted when the transaction reaches the court or registry.

- Confirm any special authority or photograph requirement.
- Review the wording before signing or paying for translation.
- Ask which original or verifiable electronic form will be accepted.
Consular and local notarial routes
A Turkish consular mission may provide a notarial route for eligible applicants and transactions. Appointment, identity, language and supporting-document requirements must be checked with that mission. A local notary abroad may be another route, but the instrument must still meet the Turkish recipient’s requirements. Property transactions can require a particular form and photograph. Foreign corporate representation may require a distinct authority chain and should not be assumed to follow the individual route.
Authentication is only one part of acceptance
For covered public documents, the Apostille Convention may replace ordinary legalisation when it applies between the relevant states. Check the competent authority, entry into force and any objection or relevant exemption. Where the Convention route does not apply, another authentication chain may be necessary. A valid apostille does not cure an inadequate power, a wrong identity or a document in the wrong form. Turkish translation must also match the intended use.
Sending, limiting and revoking authority
Have the draft and a clear scan reviewed before sending an original. Confirm the receiving address directly, use traceable delivery where appropriate and retain a full copy. Revocation involves more than deleting a digital copy or sending an informal message; the representative and relevant institutions may need effective notice. An expiry date or scope limitation should be deliberate. A power of attorney does not itself settle the lawyer’s fee or create permission to act outside the agreed engagement.
